Sydney Beaches
Those looking to mix the excitement of city life with some relaxing fun in the sun will be right at home in Sydney. The city offers up endless activities that are only rivaled by the great beaches surrounding the urban sprawl. Millions flock to Sydney's beaches every year, and whether you are looking for some good surf, golden sand, beautiful underwater scenery or just an even tan, you are sure to find a beach to suit your needs here.
Bondi Beach is probably the most famous of Sydney's waterside areas. This sandy beach is a Mecca for surfers, and is packed daily with tanned bodies donning the latest bikini fashions and surfing gear. Roughly one kilometer long, the beach also is a great place to rent surfing gear and take lessons to learn the sport of riding the waves. If you're not ready to take onto surfing yet, settle back and watch the pros: Bondi Beach is a popular hangout for professional surfers, and hosts numerous surfing events and competitions every year.
Coogee is another popular surfing beach, although it tends to be just as crowded as Bondi. Tamarama and Maroubra beaches are a bit less packed, but locals are often protective of the surf here, so if you're a beginner its best to stick to the more touristy beaches.
If you just want to relax in the sun, try Newport Reef, Palm Beach or Manly Beach. Whale Beach is in a lovely location, providing a tropical paradise of white sand and clear blue waters. Neilson Park and Camp Cove are also popular family beaches. Nudists flock to Lady Jane, situated in Vaucluse Bay.
For those looking to do some diving, there are dive spots located throughout all of the beaches surrounding the city. If snorkeling is your thing, try heading to Curl Curl to spot some exotic fish.
